Future Problem Solvers

4th - 12th Grade

Dear Connection Families:

Sara Hepner is extending the opportunity to participate in Future Problem Solving to the parents and students of Connections. Through study of current trends, and futuristic scenarios, Future Problem Solving stimulates critical and creative thinking skills for students of all ages. There are several components to the program. The most familiar, "Future Problem Solving" is an academic competition during which students create an action plan to solve a problem in a futuristic story. Students prepare by researching current information on the topic, and practicing the six steps necessary to complete the problem. This year's topics are:

  • Fundraising and Charity Giving.
  • Protection of National Treasures.
  • Cultural Prejudice.
  • Caring for Our Elders.
  • Privacy.

The topics change yearly. Teamwork, writing skills, research skills, oral communication skills, organizational skills, critical and creative thinking are all strengthened in the process. There is also an individual competition for this component. "Community Problem Solving" takes the six-step process further by applying the process to a real problem in the community, and then following through to implement the action plan. Students typically work on projects for 8 - 12 months or more. "Scenario Writing" provides writers a chance to test their futuristic thinking by writing a scenario based on one of the year's topics. "Action-based Problem Solving" is a noncompetitive component that also explores authentic concerns in the community, and focuses on positive action. The Future Problem Solving Program International is a nonprofit educational corporation with which Alaska schools have been involved for years.
